Bruce McLean - Artists Take on the Mackintosh Building (Video Tape 51)

KEY POINTS

Materials blended together to create the Building
  • Glass

  • Iron

  • Wood

  • Stone

N.B. The use of these 4 natural materials reminds me of the design aspect that Mackintosh incorporated into the libraries spars: Water (blue), Air (white), Earth (green), Fire (red).

Mackintosh brought the outside of the building in, such as the light shades in the Library which are reminiscent of the exterior design of the building.

N.B. More literally the west gable end of the original part of the building is now an interior wall.

Fantastic Views of the City from various locations in the building makes it like the eye in the heart of the City. The building seems to take ownership of Glasgow as it is perched high on the hill- like a castle.

N.B. Its position was put to good use during WWII, when students were sent to the roof to watch for air raids and damage in other parts of the city.
